Bone Broth For Gut Healing

I’m going to let you in on a little secret, maybe you’ve heard it, maybe you haven’t, but, here it is: bone broth can be incredibly helpful with reducing your fibromyalgia symptoms.

I began to read about bone broth from a medical doctor about 10 years ago and I kind of shrugged it off because it did not sound like a pleasant thing to drink first thing in the morning, or at all really.

Fast forward to the last few years where I’ve heard this same health advice over and over again from medical doctors, naturopathic doctors and fellow nutritionists and I thought to myself “yea, yea, who on earth is going to sip on bone broth in the morning! Gag, no thank you!” Well, here I am now, a year later, a very firm believer in this magic in a cup! It is now part of my almost daily routine. I just had to find the right kind to buy, and master making my own.

Adding bone broth to your routine is a super easy change to make, and who doesn’t love easy, especially when you live with chronic pain and fatigue from fibromyalgia, right?

You can either make your own (which can take a bit of time but totally worth it to get that thick, gelatinous goodness) or purchase it pre-made either in liquid format, or powdered. I do a combination of the two, I make my own (and also turn it into chicken soup), and I buy the powdered versions.

After sipping on bone broth almost every morning for 6 months I’ve definitely noticed it has helped reduce my fibro symptoms, and my poops have been stellar. Your poops say a lot about your overall health, which I’ll touch on more in depth in a future post.

Bone broth is very nutrient dense, with the nutrients being more bio-available, therefore more easily digested and absorbed into the body, which is what we want! Bone broth contains: collagen, gelatin, glycine, proline, glutamine, hyaluronic acid, glucosamine, chondroitin sulphate, cartilage, potassium, phosphorous, and magnesium.

Here are some reasons why you may want to add a cup of bone broth into your daily, or few times weekly, routine:

  1. 10g of protein per cup - hello! That’s an easy way to get in your daily protein, which by the way, I recommend 0.6-1g of protein to every pound of body weight. If you add collagen powder like I do, that’s another 5-10g!

  2. Gut healing! The glycine and glutamine in bone broth helps heal the gut, which is linked to one of the many root causes of fibromyalgia symptoms.

  3. Anti-inflammatory! The amino acids glycine and arginine, found in the broth, have strong anti-inflammatory effects, and can help reduce the chronic pain fibro warriors experience every day. Who doesn’t want that?

I’ve had a few people comment on the health of my skin lately, telling me I don’t look old enough to have a child, let alone a 5 year old, and my response is always “it must be my diet and my lifestyle” which I agree with, but maybe, it’s also the addition of the bone broth! Even my hair dresser told me my hair seemed quite healthy! Also, if you’re a pregnant or postpartum mama living with fibro, this is a KEY addition for you too!

If you want to try making your own bone broth, I get my bones from Wild Meadows Farm here in Ontario (use code Fibro15 for a discount), but if you’re not there yet, I recommend Bone Brewhouse bone broth. They come in packets and you had 1 cup of boiled water, and mix. Use code Alexis15 for a 15% discount on your first purchase!

Start there, try it out for at least a week (remember it takes 21 times, or 21 days to make a habit stick). Let me know how it tastes and goes! If you’re looking for more support for your fibro, book a free 20 minute discovery call to chat about my 8 week 1:1 Feeling Good with Fibro Program.

Cheers to living your best life with fibro!
